August 2024 Snow Trip https://championslifeskills.com/august-2024-snow-trip/ https://championslifeskills.com/august-2024-snow-trip/#respond Wed, 20 Nov 2024 03:32:56 +0000 https://championslifeskills.com/?p=2774 In August, twelve incredible Champions embarked on a 4-day, 3-night adventure that was as much about fun as it was about independence and skill building. From snowball fights to tobogganing, everyone embraced the excitement of the snow. And of course, no snow trip would be complete without a little snowman building!

One of the highlights was riding the Gondola to the top of the mountain, where all Champions challenged themselves to try something new on the alpine coaster, pushing past comfort zones with big smiles on their faces.

This trip was all about fun, learning and creating memories that will last a lifetime. From practising self-care to getting into the swing of daily routines, each moment was a chance to grow and discover something new.

Just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, our carpool karaoke sessions added a soundtrack of fun to the journey! It’s safe to say our Champions left the snow with hearts full of joy and a whole new set of skills.

Stay tuned for more inspiring stories from our Champions community!

Peter & Tarek’s Fishing Adventure https://championslifeskills.com/peter-tareks-fishing-adventure/ https://championslifeskills.com/peter-tareks-fishing-adventure/#respond Wed, 20 Nov 2024 03:31:41 +0000 https://championslifeskills.com/?p=2770 What we love most at Champions is how our programs allow for friendships to be made and Champions to develop their socials skills and confidence in a new setting.

We’re thrilled to share the heartwarming story of Peter and Tarek, two Champions who recently planned a fun-filled day together after building up a nice friendship through Champions Life Skills.

Peter and Tarek met through our program and quickly discovered a shared passion for adventure and the outdoors. Their latest escapade took them on a journey from home to the heart of the city using public transport. The destination? The serene and picturesque Walsh Bay, known for its excellent fishing spots.

Armed with fishing gear and high spirits, Peter and Tarek spent the day casting lines, sharing stories, and enjoying the tranquility of the bay. It was more than just a day of fishing; it was an opportunity to strengthen their friendship and create lasting memories.

Their day out is a perfect example of how Champions Life Skills fosters not only the development of essential life skills but also the building of meaningful relationships. We are incredibly proud of Peter and Tarek and look forward to seeing more of our Champions embark on similar adventures.

Stay tuned for more inspiring stories from our Champions community!

Champion Spotlight: Bray https://championslifeskills.com/champion-spotlight-bray/ https://championslifeskills.com/champion-spotlight-bray/#respond Wed, 20 Nov 2024 03:23:32 +0000 https://championslifeskills.com/?p=2750 This month’s Champion Spotlight focuses on beloved Champion, Bray Aquino. Bray debuted internationally at the Special Olympics World Games in Berlin in June 2023, after six months of rigorous training, overcoming a hamstring injury just before the event.

He excelled in athletics, securing 6th place in the 200m run (26.05s) and clinching gold in the 100m with a personal best time of 12.84s. Unfortunately, his relay team was disqualified. He’s been playing Try Time Football with Wentworthville United since age 15, mainly against able-bodied teams who facilitate wins for them.

Bray is now focusing on basketball and athletics for upcoming Special Olympics events. He also completed his Automotive Apprenticeship in February, securing continued employment with his company.

Mentor Spotlight: Huss https://championslifeskills.com/mentor-spotlight-huss/ https://championslifeskills.com/mentor-spotlight-huss/#respond Mon, 14 Oct 2024 03:27:09 +0000 https://championslifeskills.com/?p=2761 This month, we’re excited to introduce you to Huss, who plays a huge role in supporting our Champions and helping them achieve their goals. We asked him some questions to learn more about his favourite moments at Champions and a few fun facts you might not know!

What do you love most about working at Champions?

What I love most about working at Champions is the opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of the people I support. Every day presents new challenges and learning experiences, and seeing our Champions grow, achieve their goals and gain confidence is incredibly rewarding.

What is your most memorable moment or success story from working with our Champions?

There are so many memorable moments with so many different Champions that I support each week, but my favourite is when they come to me asking for help, and I get to play a part in helping them achieve their goals. Seeing their progress and success is what makes the job so fulfilling.

If you could teach our clients one life skill through a fun activity, what would it be and why?

If I could teach one life skill through a fun activity, it would be problem solving through team-based games or puzzles, of course considering every Champions’ function levels. Not only does this promote critical thinking and creativity, but it also encourages teamwork and communication, skills that are essential for navigating life’s challenges.

What is your dream holiday destination?

My dream holiday destination would be Japan. The mix of modern technology and rich cultural traditions fascinates me, and I’d love to experience the beautiful landscapes, historical temples, and of course, the amazing food!

What is your all-time favourite movie?

I don’t have a specific favourite movie, but I love action and comedy films. Something that keeps me entertained with great stunts and makes me laugh is my go-to.

What’s one item in your house you can’t live without and why?

My tools. Whether it’s fixing my car, working on my motorcycle or taking care of things around the house, I’m always reaching for them. Having the ability to repair and maintain things myself gives me a sense of independence and accomplishment.

We are always looking for enthusiastic, energetic support workers to join our team so if you would like to join our team get in touch with our team today!

Michael’s USA Adventure https://championslifeskills.com/michaels-usa-adventure/ https://championslifeskills.com/michaels-usa-adventure/#respond Thu, 09 May 2024 04:30:06 +0000 https://championslifeskills.com/?p=2766 In April, Champion Michael embarked on an exciting two-week respite trip with Mentor Sam. From 24 March to 7 April, the pair journeyed across the USA’s East Coast, exploring iconic destinations like New York, Miami and Orlando.

Highlights of Michael’s trip included attending a captivating Michael Jackson musical on Broadway in New York, meeting his beloved Disney character Mickey Mouse at Disney World in Orlando and witnessing an exciting basketball game between Miami and New York in Miami — a particularly memorable moment given Michael’s allegiance to the Miami Heat basketball team.

This overseas respite trip marked a first for Champions Life Skills. Michael’s notable progress in key independence skills has been remarkable. Moreover, this experience has notably boosted his confidence and overall sense of wellbeing. With its proven success for Michael, his family and Sam, we look forward to organising more adventures in the future.

Here are some touching words from Michael’s mother Helen:

Michael had spoken to us and many other people over the years about his dream of going to the USA to see a Basketball game, see a show on Broadway about Michael Jackson, go to Miami, New York, and Orlando.

That dream has come true due to the support we receive from Sam and Mary Strada and their team at Champions.

Michael’s confidence has grown, and he speaks with joy about his journey, he connected with people in the US when he was wearing different jerseys and caps and began conversations about life down under.

Since he has been back, he has started to do little things like hanging up his tee shirts and football and basketball jerseys in his wardrobe.

Believe it or not he’s now sleeping in his own room, rather than sleeping on the lounge downstairs (it’s been very challenging for over two years to try and get him to sleep in his room).

He’s been tidying up after he has had dinner, these are all little things and these changes have been since he went away with Sam, who provided lots of fun but also real role modelling for Michael.

In a speech from Bill Shorten in 2009 as the NDIS was being created “… people with a disability feel the need to be ordinary……. to be part of the normal order of things…… to seek and enjoy the opportunities that we each regard as fundamental human rights.”

This scheme and the care provided by Sam Strada has enabled Michael to be closer to achieving his “reasonable ordinary life”.

Thank you, Sam, Mary & the team of Champions.
